First off...the class you are in right now with Dr. Carter is GREAT and we had some good discussions last year regarding resistance! Also, I just saw your comment on my site regarding the job fair...where is it located and what is it specifically for? Feel free to email me: kscearce@ecpi.edu

Yet the internal consultant has a distinct advantage over many external consultants ... credibility!! If you, as an internal consultant, have consistently been authentic with those for whom you work, have been helpful to them without causing them to lose face, and have understood them better than others because of your knowledge of and ability to understand the culture in which they are embedded, then you are at a distinct advantage. This is what makes you valuable, regardless of the rate or rank of your position in the organization. I have actually seen senior vice presidents jealous of the power and influence of an internal consultant because of her credibility and the respect that others inside the organization had for her. Talk about awesome responsibility!! tjc

Hi, Janet,

I think you may be surprised just how relevant this course is in your job ... we didn't cover a lot of ground in our first class since much of our time was devoted to getting our blogs up and running, but we'll make up for that when we next meet again.

Very few of our learners will ever go out and "consult" in the sense of hanging out a shingle, but all of them work in contexts where they have to influence others, and most all of them have people who come to them for advice. I suspect that many people come to you with problems that appear to be related to training or management, asking for your input. When you help them, you're consulting.

This course will introduce you to a philosophy of helping that enables you to teach others how to solve similar problems in the future -- in essence, you become a model for learning how to learn.

I hope you enjoy it, and I think you'll learn much you can use in your work. Welcome. BTW, magic number is 8 for a class. Our classes are usually small, but that makes for an opportunity for all voices to be heard :-)

Welcome! TJC.
(Very, very nice site -- really beautifully customized.)

Welcome to ADLT 610, Janet, and to the blogosphere, as well. We are delighted to have you join us as a prospective doctoral student. You've already gotten off to a great start with this blog. One thing I've noticed about Edublogs is that writing posts to the home page will allow others to offer comments; these blog entries will be tracked and listed ("archived") as entries to your blog. Any other pages that you add, including "About" and a page for 610 and The Journey, are static pages -- you can load content onto them in writing on the page, but you cannot "post" to them ... does that make sense? So, for any class assignments, you'll want to write posts to the home page. I have very much enjoyed reading your journey. It is NEVER too late for advanced education!

I am looking forward to getting to know more about you and your interests and goals for doctoral education as the semester progresses. Welcome to this class - tjc
